Shushybye: Close Your Eyes
by Frank Caruso

Shushybye: Close Your Eyes Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

What is SHUSHYBYE?: Shushybye is the land way above the clouds where dreams are made. Living in Shushybye villages such as Nap Valley and Snore Shore, the Shushies (led by Snoozles, Dozie, and Zeez) make dreams for children then place them in Shushybye Dream Boxes, which are sent to sleeping children via the Shushybye Train driven by Conductor McCloud. In order to get their dreams each night, children have to go to sleep on time for the arrival of the Shushybye Train - when Mommy and Daddy tell them to!

The book & CD: Every night, parents can read the storybook and listen together to the wondrous (and critically-acclaimed!) original SHUSHYBYE rock ‘n roll songs and lullabies on the SHUSHYBYE CD.

Review:

"Syatt, the owner of a PR agency, launched the Shushabye brand in 2004; it includes music CDs, DVDs, a cable TV show and more. Here, a glow-in-the-dark cover introduces readers to the Shushies, who labor to 'make dreams/ To last the night through,/ Then put them in Dream Boxes/ And send them to you.' With treacly prose and garish cartoons, Syatt and Caruso tell of a plucky Shushy — the purple, perpetually grinning Snoozles — who is assigned to make dreams for two bedtime rebels. Snoozles takes the renegades' entire family on a tour of Shushybye Land: 'They saw the Rolling Hills of Nap Valley.... They saw the tall palm trees of Yawn Island and the white sands of Snore Shore'; a CD packaged with the book (not received by PW) enables children and adults to read or sing along. As a standalone, the book has little to commend it; almost nothing about this is soothing or lulling. Ages 6 mos.-3yrs." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

I wasn't interested in this book but my 4 yr old insisted on reading it. He loved it and made me read it to him every night for about a week. When he saw a stack of the books he asked me to read them to him. I explained that it was the same book we had in our bookshelf and he got very upset insisting that they are new books. I gave in and read the top copy to him but wouldn't read all 5 in the stack since they were the same story. He very earnestly told me "but Mom, they are all new books!". He likes the story because it's about a train and dreams are being delivered by train to the children.
We will be reading the second one when it comes out!
