Publisher Comments:

When you have to kill the same terrorist twice in one week there's either something wrong with your world or something wrong with your skills... and there's nothing wrong with Joe Ledger's skills. And that's both a good, and a bad thing. It's good because he's a Baltimore detective that has just been secretly recruited by the government to lead a new taskforce created to deal with the problems that Homeland Security can't handle. This rapid response group is called the Department of Military Sciences or the DMS for short. It's bad because his first mission is to help stop a group of terrorists from releasing a dreadful bio-weapon that can turn ordinary people into zombies. The fate of the world hangs in the balance....

Review:

"While raiding a terrorist cell at the start of this exciting thriller from Stoker-winner Maberry (Dead Man's Song), Baltimore PD Det. Joe Ledger shoots two .45 slugs into Javad Mustapha, killing him very dead. Four days later, while trying out for a secret government antiterrorist unit, Joe has to kill Javad all over again. It appears the terrorists have figured out a way to make zombies, and they're about to turn the legions of the undead loose on the world. Terrorist El Mujahid and his brilliant scientist wife, Amirah, who created the zombies, are working with villainous international businessman Sebastian Gault. That Sebastian and Amirah are having wild sex in the lab shows that loyalties within the group of conspirators aren't all they should be. Joe leads a team of elite fighters against the zombies, a job he performs with spectacular skill. Plenty of man-to-zombie combat, a team traitor and a doomsday scenario add up to a fast and furious read." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

Review:

"Brutal action, insanely intelligent, and so real that the hair on the back of your neck stands up!" L.A. Banks, The Vampire Huntress Legends Series, New York Times-bestselling author

Review:

"I had a fine old time reading Patient Zero. Jonathan Maberry has found a delightful voice for this adventure of Joe Ledger and his crew: while the action is heated, violent, and furious, the writing remains cool, steady, and low-key, framing all the wildness and exuberance in a calm rationality (given an almost comic edge) that renders it as palatable as your favorite flavor of ice cream. This is a lovely feat, and Maberry has written a memorable book." Peter Straub

Review:

"Patient Zero is high-octane excitement from beginning to end, and the start of a fabulous new series. Joe Ledger and the DMS have my vote as the team to beat when combating terrorist threats on a grand scale." David Morrell, New York Times-bestselling author of First Blood and Creepers

Review:

"Scary, creepy, and gripping — Patient Zero is Night of the Living Dead meets Michael Crichton." Joseph Finder, New York Times-bestselling author of Power Play

Review:

"A fast-paced, creepy thriller that's as prickly as a hospital needle and sounds a little too convincing. This guy is good." Joe R. Lansdale

Review:

"The book is as fun and funny as it is chilling and thrill-packed. Joe is a fantastic character, full of compassion, real vulnerabilities and a deliciously dark sense of humor." Kirkus Reviews

its been about a month since i read this book. since i finished, i have stew over it and passed it on to at least two other people. i guess this means i need to write about it too, as i obviously enjoyed it.

ZOMBIES, but not your typical variety. There was no alien flyby or radiation leak that caused these undead to rise and eat flesh. At no point did hell fill up and the souls of the damned rise to retake the earth.

Patient Zero is pure science. science and violent horrific terrorism bent on destroying americans and all who stand beside them. terrorists have begun activating cells testing out a new bio weapon that kills and reanimates. Joe Ledger is brought into the mix to head up a team of black-ops that will attempt to save us all.

Book 1 in Jonathan Maberry’s new series is f'in awesome. You dont pick it up expecting Hemingway, there is no desire to be reminded of The Great Gatsby or the Hours. you know what you are getting into from the first page. this is not to say that he is not a fine writer. just that he is alone the same lines as Duane Swierczynski (Author of The Blond and Severance Package) or Warren Ellis (author of Crooked Little Vein). The book is fast paced and brutal.

From the book’s summary:

When you have to kill the same terrorist twice in one week there’s either something wrong with your world or something wrong with your skills… and there’s nothing wrong with Joe Ledger’s skills.

Joe Ledger, the heartbeat of the book, is a total bad-*ss and i hope to see him in a great number of future books.

Be careful picking up this book - make sure you have plenty of time because it will keep you coming back till you finish it wanting more. Jonathan Mayberry cooks up a stew of police drama, spy thriller, and military action liberally spicing it with zombies and headline terrorist themes. He succeeds in creating very likable and believable characters that I genuinely want more stories about - even the heels.. Zombies aside this would be a great modern military thriller so even if horror is not your thing you might still want to go there.

People who like horror and want to fill in the time till World War Z the movie arrives should give this a whirl...... This is the first book of his that I have read of his but it wont be the last....
