Concrete Island

by J G Ballard

Concrete Island Cover

Staff Pick

Holy crap, what a great premise for a story: a guy, livin' the good life (a couple of lives, actually...), drives off a freeway and onto a median hemmed in (or is it?) by speeding traffic, fences, and concrete. Injured, he pulls himself out of the car and embarks on a Sisyphean struggle through the loose dirt and waist-high grass of the impossibly steep embankment that looms between him and his salvation. If he could just claw his way up to the road, surely someone will pull over to help, right? Meanwhile, hours turn into days. Will he make it off the island? Does he want to? You won't want to wait to find out. Concrete Island is unputdownable.

Publisher Comments:

On a day in April, just after three o'clock in the afternoon, Robert Maitland's car crashes over the concrete parapet of a high-speed highway onto the island below, where he is injured and, finally, trapped. What begins as an almost ludicrous predicament soon turns into horror as Maitland—a wickedly modern Robinson Crusoe—realizes that, despite evidence of other inhabitants, this doomed terrain has become a mirror of his own mind. Seeking the dark outer rim of the everyday, Ballard weaves private catastrophe into an intensely specular allegory.
