Heartsick

by Chelsea Cain

Heartsick Cover

Staff Pick

One of the best thrillers I've read in years, Heartsick is taut, edgy, and disturbing, and Archie Sheridan is a compelling new character. I eagerly anticipate the next book in this new series.

Publisher Comments:

A Living Nightmare

Portland detective Archie Sheridan spent years tracking Gretchen Lowell, a beautiful and brutal serial killer. In the end, she was the one who caught him — and tortured him — and then let him go. Why did Gretchen spare Archie's life and then turn herself in? This is the question that keeps him up all night — and the reason why he has visited Gretchen in prison every week since.

A Deadly Obsession

Meanwhile, another series of murders is tearing up the Portland streets. Archie seems to be getting closer to solving this high-profile case — until he finds himself in a fatal collision course with the killer — one that inevitably leads him back to his former captor. Gretchen may be the only one who can help do justice. The only thing she can't do, this time, is save Archie's life.

Review:

"In addition to spiky characters, Cain has a crisp voice, a wicked sense of humor, and an imagination for all the horrors that can unfold in a locked basement....Bad news for Archie, but good news for readers who relish a profoundly creepy thriller. (Grade: A-)" Entertainment Weekly

Review:

"It's a long way from a Nancy Drew parody (Confessions of a Teen Sleuth, 2005) to one of the most original serial-killer thrillers to appear in several years, but Cain makes the leap unscathed....This could well be the thriller of the year." Booklist (Starred Review)

Review:

"With Gretchen Lowell, Chelsea Cain gives us the most compelling, most original serial killer since Hannibal Lecter." Chuck Palahniuk

Review:

"Heartsick is a dizzying novel. Lurid and suspenseful with well-drawn characters, plenty of grisly surprises and tart dialogue, it delivers what readers of this particular kind of thriller expect." Kathryn Harrison, The New York Times Book Review

Review:

"For all its heavy-handed touches, Heartsick is not a cookie-cutter book. In a genre that is rife with copycatting, Ms. Cain deserves some credit for having gotten a potentially interesting new series off the ground." Janet Maslin, The New York Times

Review:

"[G]reat stuff for true-crime readers." Library Journal

Review:

"Heartsick has it all: a tortured cop, a fearless and quirky heroine, and what may be the creepiest serial killer ever created. This is an addictive read!" Tess Gerritsen

I read it because it got a good review on the "daily dose". Come to think of it, the "daily dose" never gives a bad review! Hmmmm. Could it be that a bad review doesn't sell books? Anyway,I thought HeartSick was lightweight and predictable. Formulaic. Same old same ole. No matter how hard the author, Chelsea Cain, tried to make the psychopath evil, she just didn't shock or scare me. Characters just didn't have enough depth. Especially the psycho. Would have liked to go deeper into Gretchen's mind (killer).

Easily the best, most shocking novel I have read in a long time. In fact, it was so amazing that I immediately bought the two books following it the moment I finished the first. Brilliant. Really, really brilliant.

I usually do not like romantic books but this one was pretty good. It kept me interested and had enough plot tweists to make me forget the love stuff. Good read for just about anyone.
