From family problems to outdoor school, Call Me Hope will always keep your eyes glued onto this book. The main character Hope Elliot struggles to get along with her two-faced mom, who verbally abuses her too much. Call Me Hope takes you along the days in school, where Hope reads The Diary of Anne Frank, as well as learning about how Jews were treated during WWII, where she compares that to her life. She develops a point system for every time her mom decides to call her mean names like, “hopeless”, but that doesn't hurt her as much as the word “stupid”. I thought this book was very well written, but I think it could have gone on a little more, because it kind of left me hanging. This book makes it easy for pre-teens, and teenagers who get verbally abused to relate to. Call Me Hope gets you thinking on what you have in life, like having an “angel mom”, who doesn't treat you badly. It really provokes your feelings by how you see her get treated, and how she just puts up with it.
