Azoth is a street kid, stealing to eat and having most of that stolen from him. He has only two friends and plenty of enemies. Durzo Blint is his complete opposite. Tough, harsh and smart, working as an assassin and earning plenty of money. No one bothers him and lives. Azoth wishes he could be like that and asks Blint to take him on as an apprentice. Blint refuses, but Azoth is persistant. The question is, will he succeed in wearing Blint down, or will he end up dead, either by the harsh life in the streets or at Blint's own hand?

Really good book. Intriguing characters and an interesting fantasy world. Simple writing; nothing fancy, just tell it like it is, a style very suited for the characters. My only complaint with this story is that I felt like too many characters were introduced too fast, and I wasn't always clear on what one person's relationship was to another. Overall a superb novel for those who enjoy a dark and mysterious glimpse into a harsh fantasy world.

I started to read this book and could not put it down. There are many twist that keep you interested. The characters are great. The way he builds them up, it is like you know them. I cant wait to read the next two and any more from Brent Weeks

I never write reviews or comments on books as I never know what to say... however, I felt compelled to add my thoughts on the Way of Shadows.

I have never been a fan of the assassin genre of fantasy novels. They are usually glorifying how indestructible assassins are and weak on character development.

The Way of Shadows blew that away. It was a raw and gritty tale about the life of a street urchin turned assassin. Along the way, vivid and "real" characters are introduced. Weeks never delivers the pad assassin story. The lives he portrays are simple survivors. It was quite refreshing to see that someone could weave a story about dark subjects like child abuse, murder and crime and not regale the life as one to be admired.

On the whole, I would say that the book was good bordering on great at moments. Add to this, it is Mr. Weeks first published work and I would definitely recommend it to anyone, even non-scifi fans.

I am greatly looking forward to the second and third books.
