A good, quick read, this book introduced me to a new disorder that I had never heard of--synesthesia. Descriptively rendered and fascinating, as well as accessible to younger readers, this book is a good portrait of a girl with an unusual condition trying to find her place in the world when she is very different.

I have read this book aloud to my Grade 5 students for two years now, ever since I fell in love with it during the summer and my time off from school. It is an amazingly descriptive story that can open up the world of synesthesia to people who never knew the condition existed. It teaches about empathy, understanding, and problem solving. It can also be used to discuss ethical issues such as lying and cheating. Familial relationships and problems are addressed, as is death of loved ones, friendship, first female-male attraction, internet safety (a bit), and finding out one isn't all alone. Terrific book that I highly recommend - my students do, too.
