Publisher Comments:

Originally published in 1997, DR. BERNSTEIN'S DIABETES SOLUTION is a unique resource that covers both adult- and childhood-onset diabetes, explains step-by-step how to normalize blood sugar levels and prevent or reverse complications, and offers detailed guidelines for establishing a treatment plan. Readers will find fifty gourmet recipes, in addition to a comprehensive discussion of diet, obesity, and new drugs to curb carbohydrate craving and overeating.

Now in its fourth edition, the book presents up-to-the-minute information on insulin resistance, blood-testing devices, measuring blood sugar, new types of insulin, gastroparesis and other issues, as well as updated diet guidelines. DR. BERNSTEIN'S DIABETES SOLUTION is the one book every diabetic must own.

Book News Annotation:

Diagnosed with diabetes at age 12, Bernstein, formerly an engineer, became an MD and developed a program for diabetic blood sugar normalization based on blood sugar metering and a low-carb diet. Some of what he recommends in this plain-language guide for general readers is in direct opposition to the recommendations of the American Diabetes Association, such as the avoidance of certain oral agents that impair insulin-producing beta cells. The book explains medical concepts related to diabetes, obesity, weight control, insulin resistance, and incretin mimics, and presents the experiences of 14 patients who have successfully used the program. It offers step-by-step directions on how and when to measure blood sugar and provides guidelines for personal meal plans, along with 50 pages of recipes. This revised edition reflects new products, medications, and supplements since the book was first published in 1997. A companion website contains the author's articles, a history of his methods, and a chat group. The audience for the book includes patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, as well as doctors and diabetes educators. Bernstein is a fellow of the American College of Endocrinology. Most diabetes books either give nutrition advice on avoiding full-blown diabetes, or contain info on contending with the disease once you have it. But "Diabetes Solution" is by far the most comprehensive guide out there. As a naturopathic doctor I have used it as the foundation for my diabetes care with a great deal of success. What could be more inspiring than a man's personal success at managing such a disease? Bernstein's uncompromising adherence to the goal of normal blood sugars for diabetics can be difficult to reach, but this book really reveals the stark difference between books that promise "cures" for pre-diabetics and one that takes the disease seriously. Indispensable and fascinating, it is literally a one-volume encyclopedia.
