Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Kicking off a juicy new series, this book introduces a group of girls who are navigating the social minefields of eighth grade at New York's Westchester County's most exclusive private school.

Review:

"Middle schoolers who have participated in the 'popularity game' may be drawn to this series opener by a first-time author, which takes cliquish, snobbish behavior to Hollywood extremes. Massie Block, whom readers will love to hate, is rich, conniving and the uncontested leader of the 'A-list' group of seventh graders at an exclusive private girls' school in New York's affluent Westchester County. When Mr. Block's unemployed college friend moves his family into the Blocks' guest house, Mrs. Block pushes Massie to befriend their daughter, Claire, who is the same age but dresses 'like one of the cast members from Barney and Friends'; Massie predictably rebels. She wastes no opportunity to let Claire know there is no room for her in the in-crowd; Claire, however, decides to fight back. What follows is a rigorous battle of wills between the girls involving backbiting, scheming and carrying out nasty pranks. With an arsenal stocked with designer clothing and cosmetics, fancy cell phones and 'mani/pedi' appointments, Massie and her friends publicly humiliate Claire time after time, and Claire, slowly but surely, figures out a way to turn Massie's friends against her. Readers who are initially amused may find that the successive acts of one-upmanship result in a one-note read — while Massie and Claire experience a moment or two of camaraderie, they stay pretty superficial, unchanged by their victories and defeats. Ages 12-up." Publishers Weekly (Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information, Inc.)

d cover was very interesting so i instantly bought it- guess wat,i couldn't take my eyes off it!!! i fully read it in 1 day!! i had a few giggles along d way, Massie n Alicia (w/o Claire) were so spunky n fashionable! sure,Kristen n Dylan also wore designer outfits but M & A were MUCH MORE cuter! aside from dat i liked d story....LIKED not LUVED dats y i gave it 4 stars instead of 5 also i understand dat they're "d mean girls" but dey gone TOO far, they're so mean 2 Claire- okay, dey don't want her in d clique,ANYONE wouldn't like a stranger u just met dat suddenly wants to be bestfriends w/ u n...well,ur other BFF'S IN THE WHOLE WORLD, dats so annoying but at least just a good/close friend dat would be okay!it's also very confusing bec. dis day, massie is suddenly out-of-nowhere kind 2 Claire... d next day? tells her friends to dump food on her ,weird, right? exactly but d OVERALL is" I RECOMMEND DIS" :)
