By granting absolutely no photographs, conducting scant interviews, and only choosing to speak through his agent, Pynchon (considered for the Nobel Prize in Literature) has made it clear that he wishes to be known by his words. By far, Slow Learner is his easiest book to digest — and he is at his most revealing in its introduction. Whether you've yet to tackle his novels or you're already a fan, this collection is definitely on the "Literary Smarty-Pants" required reading list.

The short story feels at odds with the capaciousness, sprawl and ambition of most of Pynchon's work. These 5 stories are from the 50s & 60s and, while not particularly memorable, they are interesting compared to what would come later. The best part is the short introduction from the author, who is notoriously private, but comes across as engaging, low-key and almost normal. His most accessible work.
