A masterpiece written in different texts using different styles from an author who died sadly too young. Bolano was interested in how literature and life intersect. In The Savage Detectives literature predominated, in a delightful, life enhancing way. In this book it is life that is centrestage,in the hard and vicious world he describes in drug cartel Mexico, where the disappearance and murder of women is logged minutely and in unflinching detail. The description of the revenge attack between gang members from different gangs held in prison, with the warders queuing up to see the violence will remain with me forever as a metaphor for the reader's relationship with these characters. Despite its seeming irrelevance, the ongoing search for the central literary figure has its dignity and ultimately justifies the writing of the book; storytelling is a means of understanding and healing.
