Living in peaceful Shady Vale, Shea Ohmsford knew little of the troubles that plagued the rest of the world. Then the giant, forbidding Allanon revaled that the supposedly dead Warlock Lord was plotting to destory the world. The sole weapon against this Power of Darkness was the Sword of Shannara, which could only be used by a true heir of Shannara--Shea being the last of the bloodline, upon whom all hope rested. Soon a Skull Bearer, dread minion of Evil, flew into the Vale, seeking to destroy Shea. To save the Vale, Shea fled, drawing the Skull Bearer after him....

What a great book! This adventurous tale by Brooks is impossible to put down and even harder to stop thinking about.

Before ever encountering Lewis' Narnia, Le Guin's Earthsea, or Tolkien's LOTR, I read The Sword of Shannara. I was staying up too late on school nights, having to discover what would happen next. Several years passed before I reflected on how profound the truth woven into the book really was. By now, decades have gone by, and I find that it is still THE book that comes to mind when recommending something to my nephew, who greatly enjoys the fantasy genre. Good stuff! If you can get ahold of an edition that includes the artwork of The Brothers Hildebrandt, as mine did, it's even better.
