although very well presented and executed, the study lacks certain psychological features. for example, the study was only conducted using a male sample which makes the findings irrelevant for females. Also the size of the sample is too small for a significant result, only 15 participants were over the age of 45 (one of the areas tested).

Further work has been conducted by Roberts & Newton in order to establish a set of stages for females. It was found from this study that women's life stages are completely different to males due to the different amounts of investment made at key points during life e.g. childbirth, marriage etc.

Even though this study was a breakthrough for its time, it still isn't psychologically foolproof. Levinson needed to of increased his sample size and width to ensure females were integrated into his stages and design.
