Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Bilbo Baggins was a hobbit who wanted to be left alone in quiet comfort. But the wizard Gandalf came along with a band of homeless dwarves. Soon Bilbo was drawn into their quest, facing evil orcs, savage wolves, giant spiders, and worse, unknown dangers. Finally, it was Bilbo — alone and unaided — who had to confront the great dragon Smaug, the terror of an entire countryside...

This stirring adventure fantasy begins the tale of the hobbits that was continued by J.R.R. Tolkien in his bestselling epic, The Lord of the Rings.

This is one of those books that you read when young, and revisit as an adult with fresh eyes. It is even more engaging the second time. In youth, the adventure and intricate, cleverly depicted imaginary world capture your imagination, and as an adult, the details and hidden meanings bring new life to the story. This is read, read, and read again literary treasure.

This a great prequel to the LOTR series. Peter Jackson is directing 2 movies based on it which are coming out in December '12 & '13
so it is a good idea to refresh on a classic. It is the story of how Bilbo found the one ring.

I know this book didn't come out in 2011, but with the word that Peter Jackson is going at it again; I thought I would sharpen up. The Hobbit is awesome. Short enough to keep you interested (Lord of The Rings, being an undertaking), but also long enough to create and sustain amazing world building. It has been years since I read this book and I love it.
A real treasure.
