MOVE OVER, PAUL BUNYAN--MAKE WAY FOR MAD AMOS MALONE!

Strange things lurk up in the mountains and out in the plains and deserts of the West, but few are as unique as the giant mountain man named Amos Malone, the man some call Mad Amos, though not to his face. But when the world gets weird, there's no one who's better to have on your side...
Is a renegade dragon harassing the men laying the rails of the great railroad? Are headless Indian spirits driving you from your land? Is that volcano threatening to destroy your settlement? Then Mad Amos is the man for you.
Plus, two new, never-before-published stories in the Mad Amos canon:
NEITHER A BORROWER BE: When a horse thief sets his sights on stealing Amos' faithful mount Worthless, he gets more than he expects...for Worthless isn't exactly an ordinary horse...
THE PURL OF THE PACIFIC: Mad Amos takes to the high seas on a whale of an adventure and thwarts a vengeful South Pacific island shaman at his own game...
Ten delightful stories of dragons, jackalopes, snake-oil salesmen, iron horses, and, of course, the incomparable Mad Amos Malone from the incredible imagination of world-class storyteller and bestselling author Alan Dean Foster!

Table of Contents

Introduction — Wu-Ling's folly — Ferrohippus — Witchen woes — Jackalope — The chrome commanche — Agrarian deform — Having words — What you see-- — Neither a borrower be-- — The purl of the Pacific.

This short story collection follows the adventures of Amos Malone, A.K.A. Mad Amos, a huge mountain man living in a Wild West a bit different than the one history tells us about. He rides a part-unicorn with a filed-down horn (that's suppose to keep him from scaring people) and does his best to help people on the frontier who have some unusual problems. Through this collection does everything from Amos chase off an attacking dragon in pursuit of gold to battling a medicine man who refuses to share his great expanse of land with any other being in a magical duel of insults.

I had fun reading this book. Each story was entertaining and I didn't skip any, which is rare for a story collection. Amos isn't a complex character and there wasn't really character development going on, but he is like a classic pulp character in that way. Worthless, his "horse", amused me a lot with his bad attitude and role as the sidekick. I did get annoyed with the fact that Worthless' lineage was inconsistent. It is distracting to keep noticing that the list of breeds in his motley background kept changing.

The writing isn't exceptional, but it is dryly funny. The dialogue tended to be stilted at times.

If you are looking for a light and somewhat silly read, this is perfect. If you want something serious, best to keep looking.
