Publisher Comments:

If J.J. Abrams, Margaret Atwood, and Alan Weisman collaborated on a novel... it might be this awesome

Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; all the members of the second expedition committed suicide; the third expedition died in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another; the members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within months of their return, all had died of aggressive cancer.

This is the twelfth expedition.

Their group is made up of four women: an anthropologist; a surveyor; a psychologist, the de facto leader; and our narrator, a biologist. Their mission is to map the terrain and collect specimens; to record all their observations, scientific and otherwise, of their surroundings and of one another; and, above all, to avoid being contaminated by Area X itself.

They arrive expecting the unexpected, and Area X delivers — they discover a massive topographic anomaly and life forms that surpass understanding — but its the surprises that came across the border with them, and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another, that change everything.

Annihilation is the first volume in Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy, which will be published throughout 2014: volume two (Authority) in June, and volume three (Acceptance) in September.

Review:

“A tense and chilling psychological thriller about an unraveling expedition and the strangeness within us. A little Kubrick, a lot Lovecraft, the novel builds with an unbearable tension and a claustrophobic dread that linger long afterward. I loved it.” Lauren Beukes, author of The Shining Girls

Review:

"In much of Jeff VanderMeer's work, a kind of radiance lies beating beneath the surface of the words. Here in Annihilation, it shines through with warm blazing incandescence. This is one of a grand writer's finest and most dazzling books." Peter Straub, author of Lost Boy, Lost Girl

Review:

"One of those books where it all comes together — the story and the prose and the ideas, all braided into a triple helix that gives rise to something vibrant and alive. Something that grows, word-by-word, into powerful, tangled vines that creep into your mind and take hold of it. Annihilation is brilliant and atmospheric, a novel that has the force of myth." Charles Yu, author of How to Live in a Science Fictional Universe

I normally don't like creepy/suspenseful stories, but this book blew my mind. It kept me up at night reading. The pacing is fabulous and I love the writing. The story is fascinating, with really well-done twists that I didn't see coming (and I'm usually great at predicting plot twists.) The rest of the series is good, but if you don't have the time or don't want to make the commitment, reading Annihilation is honestly enough. Enjoy!

I couldn't seem to put this book down, every time I read before bed I would put it down unwillingly due to exhaustion from staying up thinking 'just one more page' ending up reading another quarter of the book. Small in size it still packs a load of information that draws you in and begs to be read more. The moment I finished I ran back to buy the rest of the series.

Area X has my undivided attention. An amazing genre-bending start to what is sure to be a surreal trip through three books. The writing style is clear and linguistically appealing creating vivid mind-blowing pictures that mix myth with an unsettling and horrifying “reality.” The atmospheric distortion is tense, creepy and brilliant. I was completely engrossed and terrified. The unreliable narrator adds to the fear and uncertainty of the characters and the reader. A bizarre blend of sci-fi, horror, mystery, and suspense that is riveting. Highly recommended for any adventurous reader! Don’t expect to find familiar ground here, but expect to be sucked in.
