Synopses & Reviews

Book News Annotation:

It is hard not to share the author's cynicism as the political endgame in Bosnia continues, with Serbian war criminals free and periodic violence mocking the Dayton peace accord. Hopefully, the appalling phase of genocide that Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Rohde uncovered in 1995--the mass graves of about 7,000 Muslim men near the ironically-named UN civilian safe area of Srebenica--is over. He personalizes the abstract horror of this massacre, by mapping and chronicling the experiences of seven individuals of diverse ethnicities through the ten-day period during which the town fell (after UN commanders turned down repeated requests for air strikes against attacking Bosnian Serbs).
