Publisher Comments:

From the author of The History Boys and The Clothes They Stood Up In

A deliciously funny novella that celebrates the pleasure of reading. When the Queen in pursuit of her wandering corgis stumbles upon a mobile library  she feels duty bound to borrow a book. Aided by Norman, a young man from the palace kitchen who frequents the library, Bennett describes the Queen’s transformation as she discovers the liberating pleasures of the written word. With the poignant and mischievous wit of The History Boys, England’s best loved author revels in the power of literature to change even the most uncommon reader’s life.

Review:

"Samuel Johnson first celebrated the good sense of 'the common reader,' and Virginia Woolf borrowed the phrase when she needed a title for her two big essay collections. Most of us who wander into our local bookstore in search of an amusing novel or the latest political biography might also call ourselves just such a reader. But what of 'the uncommon reader'? Who is he?

This novel captures the joy . . . and addictiveness of reading like no book I have read before. It is also quite funny. Somewhat ironically, I could not help thinking about the wonderful movie, The Queen. Films about writers are notoriously difficult to make, and I imagine a movie about a voracious reader would be nearly impossible, but I dare say we have its sequel in The Uncommon Reader.

Its a truly delightful work of fiction, one can almost imagine Her Majesty feeling obliged to smuggle her books out with her, like so much contraband. What a joy to read, gentle, sex-free, violence-free and humorous, you have to feel better just having read it. Well done Mr Bennett (Sir Alan?)
