Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Marguerite Yourcenar instantly assumes command of our imagination in her novel The Abyss. Almost before we know it the author establishes a scene and time, and engages us in the fate of two cousins.

About the Author

Marguerite Yourcenar (1903-87) wrote stories, plays, poems, and novels, notably Memoirs of Hadrian. She was the first woman to be elected to the Academie Francaise.

Mauguerite Yourenar's imagery and characters of the time of the Black Death have stayed with me for decades. Her beautiful language (translated from the original French) and complex ideas challenged me when I first read The Abyss as a young adult. I have recommended it many times to readers that are interested in religion, faith and power in the Middle Ages.
