Mauguerite Yourenar's imagery and characters of the time of the Black Death have stayed with me for decades. Her beautiful language (translated from the original French) and complex ideas challenged me when I first read The Abyss as a young adult. I have recommended it many times to readers that are interested in religion, faith and power in the Middle Ages.
