J. Edgar Hoover, the Ku Klux Klan, Howard Hughes, Jimmy Hoffa and dozens of I-talian "businessmen" do battle with "Martin Lucifer Coon," Jack and Bobby Kennedy, and other "Communists" in James Ellroy's latest tomes. Ellroy's tommy-gun prose and morally compromised or deficient characters weave a tapestry of deceit, degeneracy, conspiracy and murder in what is considered the best crime writing of the decade. The sixties never looked so evil. I couldn't put either book down.

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

We are behind, and below, the scenes of JFK's presidential election, the Bay of Pigs, the assassination – in the underworld that connects Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, D.C....

Where the CIA, the Mob, J. Edgar Hoover, Howard Hughes, Jimmy Hoffa, Cuban political exiles, and various loose cannons conspire in a covert anarchy...

Where the right drugs, the right amount of cash, the right murder, buys a moment of a man's loyalty...

Where three renegade law-enforcement officers--a former L.A. cop and two FBI agents--are shaping events with the virulence of their greed and hatred, riding full-blast shotgun into history....

James Ellroy's trademark nothing-spared rendering of reality, blistering language, and relentless narrative pace are here in electrifying abundance, put to work in a novel as shocking and daring as anything he's written: a secret history that zeroes in on a time still shrouded in secrets and blows it wide open.

The one that got me started. My favorite author from my favorite genre - you'd do yourself a disservice not to complete the trilogy.

James Ellroy's "American Tabloid" is not just the best piece of pulp I have ever read, but one of the best pieces of historial fiction ever produced! Being inspired by John Dos Passos' "USA Trilogy", Ellroy provides the reader with a vision of the Kennedy years that shows while idealism was the salient trait of that period, it died before November 22, 1963.
The historical personalities that appear in the novel all play their roles convincingly as the epitomies of the era and are not simple, passive, cardboard figures which are used to further the plot. The protagonists are simply real people that you hate to love as their attitudes change as the American past rolls on by. While events control us, we are the ones who make them.
