Publisher Comments:

She is beautiful, she is a princess, and Aphrodite is her favorite goddess, but something in Helen of Sparta just itches for more out of life. Not one to count on the godsor her looksto take care of her, Helen sets out to get what she wants with steely determination and a sassy attitude. That same attitude makes Helen a few enemiessuch as the self-proclaimed "son of Zeus" Theseusbut it also intrigues, charms, and amuses those who become her friends, from the famed huntress Atalanta to the young priestess who is the Oracle of Delphi.

In Nobody's Princess, author Esther Friesner deftly weaves together history and myth as she takes a new look at the girl who will become Helen of Troy. The resulting story offers up adventure, humor, and a fresh and engaging heroine you cannot help but root for.

From the Hardcover edition.

At first, I had mixed feelings about this retelling of Helen of Troy. Overall, the good outweighed the bad, but I'll start with the bad: the modern voice. It didn't flow well for me, but then I'm 23. I had a 14 year old read it, and she loved it. She said the modern voice really helped to keep her interest, since "classics" can be hard to understand. So, since this a young adult book, I think my issue doesn't really apply.

Now, for the good. The history woven into the story is wonderful. Ancient Greece really comes alive. The women are very strong characters, which is great for a young adult book. Helen is also active, and it inspired the 14 year old I know to look into self-defense classes. So, I'm giving this a 5 because it is a young adult. As an adult book, I would've given it a 4.
