This is a charming love story with a feminist slant, set in turn-of-the-20th-century Australia.

Missy Wright has always been the oddball: she's dark haired, average and poor in a family of blond giants that own almost every business in town. Considered a very old maid at 33, she meets a quirky librarian who encourages her to defy her smug, controlling family. She seizes opportunities to get the few nice people in the family out of poverty and makes a play for a handsome stranger.

I fell in love with this story as a teen, and it holds up well now that I've re-read it as an adult. One note: there are many points in common with L. M. Montgomery's The Blue Castle which have lead to talk of plagiarism. I don't have any opinion about that, but I strongly prefer The Ladies of Missalonghi as a book. The writing style, characterization, and humor draw me in time and again.
