Having devoured as much Daphne du Maurier as I could get my hands on as a teenager (after my sisters were done, of course), I can confidently recommend Rebecca as the best gothic love story and mystery I have ever read.
Part mystery, part Gothic romance, Rebecca is a novel awash in fear, taut suspense, and an overwhelming feeling of doom. The deceased Rebecca has a larger-than-life presence — so much so that the new Mrs. DeWinter's first name is never revealed. But things are not always what they seem. Max DeWinter and his new bride tangle with the creepy housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, and the oppressive presence of Rebecca. With a shocking ending, a gorgeous setting, and amazing characters, Rebecca is a true classic. I envy all who read it for the first time. Amazing!
