About the Author

Naguib Mahfouz was born in Cairo in 1911 and began writing when he was seventeen. A student of philosophy and an avid reader, he has been influenced by many Western writers, including Flaubert, Balzac, Zola, Camus, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and, above all, Proust. He has more than thirty novels to his credit, ranging from his earliest historical romances to his most recent experimental novels. In 1988, Mahfouz was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He lives in the Cairo suburb of Agouza.

I discovered this wonderful author by accident in 2011 before the Arab spring. Mahfouz is a Nobel Prize winning Egyptian writer who beautifully describes Egypt at the end of World War II through the life of a devout Muslim family. The writing is comparable with Faulkner in its ability to depict an entire culture and society through the life of one family. The tension between devotion to one's religious and family tradition and the need to interpret these traditions for oneself autonomously and freely resonates daily in news from the middle east. This is the best book I have read in years!

Think of Mahfouz as the Proust of the Arab world. This book takes you far inside the private lives of Cairenes in the early 1940s. We learn about a family's life, both inside and outside the home, in beautifully detailed accounts of social engagement. This wonderful translation maintains a real Arabic flavor.

Mahfouz does an excellent job of opening up the daily world of an Egyptian wife and mother, and her family. He describes the inner emotions of the strictest of fathers, who in reality is a player that hides behind his stern facade to keep his structure at home together. This enthralling story is hard to put down once started. It leaves deep hunger for the next and the next books.
