"Nordstrom rushed from the apartment to find a prostitute. There were none to be had in the neighborhood bars and he ended up watching a Red Sox game on television, baseball being an effective nationwide soporific." The title is a little misleading and this actually contains three novellas: "Revenge," "The Man Who Gave Up His Name," and "Legends of the Fall." "Revenge" about a man getting, you guessed it revenge, on the dude who tried to kill him was also made into a bad movie (1990) was a little too macho for my taste. The middle story is by far the best, a kind of Cheever or Updike type plot, but with more vitality and guts than they usually have. The title novella is very different than the movie and way better, which is no surprise. Three stars for "Revenge" and "Fall," four stars for "The Man Who."
