Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Sam is almost 11 when he discovers a locked box in the attic above his grandfather Mack's room, and a piece of paper that says he was kidnapped. There are lots of other words, but Sam has always had trouble reading. He's desperate to find out who he is, and if his beloved Mack is really his grandfather. At night he's haunted by dreams of a big castle and a terrifying escape on a boat. Who can he trust to help him read the documents that could unravel the mystery? Then he and the new girl, Caroline, are paired up to work on a school project, building a castle in Mack's woodworking shop. Caroline loves to read, and she can help. But she's moving soon, and the two must hurry to discover the truth about Sam.

This is a cool, suspenseful read by the author of Pictures of Hollis Woods. Shortly before his eleventh birthday, Sam is hunting for birthday presents in the attic when he comes across a mysterious newspaper clipping -- it seems to suggest that Sam's grandfather, Mack, might not be his grandfather after all. But Sam can't read more than a few words on his own, so he must enlist the help of his new friend Caroline in order to solve the mystery.

What really made this book enjoyable for me was the wonderful descriptions. Giff has a talent for capturing feelings that might be unfamiliar to the reader: the way it feels to look at writing on a page and not be able to form the letters into words or the words into meaningful sentences, or the experience of crafting something carefully out of wood. Despite the brevity of the book, her characters also feel like real, warm people that I would want to know.
