About the Author

Patrick O'Brian wrote many novels, including the extraordinarily popular Aubrey/Maturin series about the Royal Navy in the time of Nelson. He died in 2000.

Patrick O'brian's Aubrey/Maturin series are riveting fiction about the British navy, at the end of the 1700's and into the early 1800's. Many of the adventures are based on true accounts from British navy logs and correspondence, into which "Lucky Jack" Aubrey and his crews are placed.
Watch the movie with Russell Crowe, then read the books. You will see excerpts from many of the books thorughout the movie.
Once you start the first book, you'll want to read them all!

This is my favorite Patrick O'Brian book so far, despite stiff competition. It's a classic 'out of the frying pan, into the fire' adventure, beautifully written. From the sharp practices of landsmen on rich sailors to a vicious storm in the Bay of Biscay, and on and on into more and more pressing perils until you are perched over the book, rigid with tension as the ship flees an implacable enemy over cataclysmically high seas. Epic, unforgettable book.
