Malba Tahan is the creation of a celebrated Brazilian mathematician who was looking for a way to bring some of the mysteries and delights of mathematics to a wider public. He turned out to be a born storyteller.

The adventures of Beremiz Samir, The Man Who Counted, take the reader on an exotic journey in which, time and again, he summons his extraordinary mathematical powers to settle disputes, give wise advice, overcome dangerous enemies, and win for himself fame and fortune. as we accompany him, we learn much of the history of famous mathematicisns who preceded him; we undergo a series of trials at the hands of the wise men of the day; and we come to admire the warm wisdom and patience that earn him the respect and affection of those whose problems he resolves so astutely. In the grace of their telling, these stories hold unusual delights for the reader.

Hi, just want to share some of my insight and how much I love this book. I got it for my 10th birthday. Although, this book does have some downsides like I would not consider it for someone under the age of 9 to read by themselves as it is a rather long book and little kids would not appreciate the fine literature. This is great stuff you're getting, not just some Junie B. Jones or Magic Treehouse. Even adults say so! Even then, there are parts that kids probably won't understand as it does take place in Baghdad, and Beremiz is Persian. And the language-- fine language(nothing inappropriate) but, again: This takes place a long, long, time ago, in the 14th century. So just don't be alarmed and think your child can't read if they come running to you saying, "I don't understand this." Another heads-up is that there is a lot of religion in this book. I would recommend this to 11+, ir an exceptionally bright 10 year old.
