Though I've know about Pinochet and the 1973 coup, I knew very little about the details of it and Pinochet two-decade dictatorship. I recently read the Chilean novel "The House of the Spirits" by Isabel Allende, a relative of the deposed and killed president Salvador Allende, which prompted me to pick this up. You can be a committed leftist and still acknowledge the chaos his election caused, just as you can be a committed anti-communist and see how brutal Pincohet and his rule were. The authors do an admirable job of presenting a balanced view of what is a very polarizing period. The United States hated the democratically elected Allende and while we didn't exactly support the coup, we certainly didn't offer any resistance to it. Required reading for those who want to understand Latin America and our foreign policy blunders there.
