Publisher Comments:

Here is a mini-anthology of poetry and prose for both aficionados and those readers discovering Rainer Maria Rilke for the first time. John J. L. Mood has assembled a collection of Rilke's strongest work, presenting commentary along with the selections. Mood links into an essay passages from letters that show Rilke's profound understanding of men and women and his ardent spirituality, rooted in the senses. Combining passion and sensitivity, the poems on love presented here are often not only sensual but sexual as well. Others pursue perennial themes in his work--death and life, growth and transformation. The book concludes with Rilke's reflections on wisdom and openness to experience, on grasping what is most difficult and turning what is most alien into that which we can most trust.

This small tome is one of my favorite and most faithfully helpful books about the work of love.
For me, "Rilke on Love and other Difficultes" is a friend who consoles me when I am aching with need for understanding and solace.
I get it out and reread it when I need advice about how to be loving, when I am confused about the depths and intensity of my feelings, when I need a pholosophy that moves me toward staying open. Rilke's spaciousness about the need for solitude when "in Love" is so useful. I was reading this out loud to a dear friend the other day and realized for the 100th time how essential RIkle's concepts about love are for developing an individual and functional relatedness to love. I had parts of this work read out loud by my father at my wedding in 1989 and the copy I got then came from Powell's books even though I livd in Missouri at the time. Ah Life, Ah Love...
I read this book for the first time in 1981 for a class on Existentialism taught at Stephens College. My friend Martha Perkins and I did a talk show format approach to the work of Rilke and Neitsche. The book captivated me with it's amazing insights on Love as work. The essay three page essay "Dragon Princess" at the ed of the book ends with the sentence, "Pwerhaps everything that frightens us is in its deepest self something helpless that wants help from us."
