My 9-yr-old son did not inherit the "reading" gene, so getting him to pick up a book without cartoon characters in it has been a challenge. We stumbled onto the Bullseye Step into Classics series while searching for a children's version of Les Miserables to help prepare the kids to see the musical. My son loved the book and immediately wanted to read the other volumes in the set... Swiss Family Robinson, Dracula, Phantom of the Opera, etc... I think ordered every volume Powells had! Obviously, these are not replacements for the real thing, but what a testament to the power of these stories that they captured the imagination of someone who volunteers to clean his room if it gets him out of reading!!
