When I first found this book in a stack at the public library, I was about 4 and the year was 1959. I remember being thrilled by Marjorie Flack's beautiful illustrations and inspired by the story told by author DuBose Heyward. In fact I became so fixated on this book that my mother finally had to special order a copy from the local bookstore in order to persuade me to return the library's copy. Highly recommended for its gentle but spirited message and lovely presentation.
