Stolen Preyby John Sandford
Synopses & Reviews
The extraordinary new Lucas Davenport thriller from #1 New York Timesbestselling author and Pulitzer Prizewinner John Sandford.
They call them Travelers. They move from city to city, panhandling, committing no crimes—they just like to stay on the move. And now somebody is killing them.
Lucas Davenports adopted daughter, Letty, is home from college when she gets a phone call from a woman Traveler shed befriended in San Francisco. The woman thinks somebodys killing her friends, shes afraid she knows who it is, and now her male companion has gone missing. Shes hiding out in North Dakota, and she doesnt know what to do.
Letty tells Lucas shes going to get her, and, though he suspects Lettys getting played, he volunteers to go with her. When he hears the womans story, though, he begins to think theres something in it. Little does he know. In the days to come, he will embark upon an odyssey through a subculture unlike any he has ever seen, a trip that will not only put the two of them in danger—but just may change the course of his life.
"A horrific crime — the torture murders of Patrick Brooks, his wife, son, daughter, and three dogs at their palatial lakeside home in Wayzata, Minn. — propels bestseller Sandford's solid 22nd novel featuring Lucas Davenport of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (after 2011's Buried Prey). That DEA officials believe the killings to be the work of Los Criminales del Norte brings Mexican detective David Rivera and assistant Ana MartÃnez to the Twin Cities area, though Brooks's Spanish-language company, Sunnie Software, which peddled its product in Mexico, appears to have been an unlikely money laundry. Since the author makes it clear who the bad guys are early on, the slow revelation of what they've done and how they've done it gives the story its kick. Meanwhile, Lucas, after a couple of meth addicts rob him at an ATM, turns for help to series regular Virgil Flowers, who gets surprising results. Once again, Sandford smoothly blends action and suspense with a soupçon of humor. Author tour. Agent: Esther Newberg, ICM." Publishers Weekly Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.
The brilliant Lucas Davenport thriller from the number one New York Times bestselling author.
Lucas Davenport has seen many terrible murder scenes. This is one of the worst. In the Minnesota town of Wayzata, an entire family has been killed—husband, wife, two kids, dogs. On the wall, in blood: Were coming.” No apostrophe.
Theres something about the scene that tugs at Lucass cop instincts—it looks an awful lot like the kind of scorched-earth retribution hes seen from Mexican drug gangs. But this is a seriously upscale town, the husband ran a modest software company, the wife dabbled in local politics. None of it seems to fit.
Until it does
Lucas Davenport has seen many terrible murder scenes. This is one of the worst. In the small Minnesota town of Wayzata, an entire family has been killed—husband, wife, two daughters, dogs.
There’s something about the scene that pokes at Lucas’s cop instincts—it looks an awful lot like the kind of scorched-earth retribution he’s seen in drug killings sometimes. But this is a seriously upscale town, and the husband was an executive vice president at a big bank. It just doesn’t seem to fit.
Until it does. And where it leads Lucas will take him into the darkest nightmare of his life.
