Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The first novel featuring park ranger Anna Pigeon is reissued. When a fellow ranger is killed and his death is ruled a mountain lion attack, Anna's suspicions are raised. It's up to her to save the protected cats from the prejudiced locals--and prove the kill was the work of a species far less rare.

Review:

Extraordinary...the pages leap to life. (USA Today)

Review:

Powerful writing and deft characterizations...a winning novel. (Faye Kellerman)

Synopsis:

Anna Pigeon takes a job as a park ranger looking for peace in the wilderness-but finds murder instead.

Nevada Barr introduces her exquisite and complex character, park ranger Anna Pigeon, in this tense and thrilling mystery. Set in Guadalupe Mountains National Park in western Texas, Barr's descriptions of place are pivotal in this book as in her remaining series. The mystery here is a nerve-tacking page-turner - with a mutilated park ranger, an implicated wildcat and a host of human suspects. And the world in which the mystery takes place is excellently drawn and never dull. Anna Pigeon is a character that we grow to love and deeply respect and the National Park System is a great background in which to explore her character. Cynical and idealistic at the same time, Anna Pigeon is driven and open-eyed and the danger to her life and well-being is real and brutal here. Barr understands how dark the wide, wild world really is and she plays it brilliantly. Track of the Cat is a first-class nail-biter.
