Special Voices is a book of stories, the stories of children with special needs in a regular fifth grade classroom. It is also the story of how their teacher learned to create a classroom environment that enabled them to overcome many of their problems. Ms. Five describes how students with various learning needs and emotional and behavioral problems became part of, and flourished within, the classroom community instead of working in isolated settings. Readers will become involved in the struggles and successes of learners whom they will easily recognize. They will hear the voices of Angela, a child with learning disabilities; Tomoko and Yasuo, two ESL children; Andrew, a child at risk; and others. Classroom teachers will be inspired by these eight children and their dedicated teacher.
Although Special Voices tells stories of eight children, these students' successes can be generalized and applied to all children. Regular-classroom teachers will find answers to many of their own problems related to special learners. They will discover how they too can include them in their classroom communities.

About the Author
Cora Lee Five is a fifth-grade teacher at Edgewood School in Scarsdale, New York. She is the author of Special Voices (Heinemann, 1992), which describes her case studies of students with special needs in a regular classroom. In 1990, she received the Professional Best leadership award from Learning Magazine. She is a member of the NCTE Elementary Section Steering Committee and serves on the Middle Childhood/English Language Arts Standards Committee for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
