Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This remarkable and symbolic novel centers around Wariinga's tragedy and uses it to tell a story of contemporary Kenya faced with the "satan of capitalism." Ngugi has directed his writing even more firmly towards the commitment that he shows in Writers in Politics and Detained: A Writer's Prison Diary. The novel was written secretly in prison on the only available material — lavatory paper. It was discovered when almost complete but unexpectedly returned to him on his release. Such was the demand for the original Gikuyu edition that it reprinted on publication.

Synopsis:

This remarkable and symbolic novel centers on Wariinga's tragedy and uses it to tell a story of contemporary Kenya.

About the Author

Ngugi is world famous for his novels from Weep Not, Child to Matigari and the impact of his plays, especially in Gikuyu, which led to his detention in Kenya. He is now Professor of Comparative Literature and Performance Studies in New York University. This book reflects many of the concerns found in Decolonising the Mind and Moving the Centre.

If you have never read a book by an African author, this book will leave you on the edge of your seat as you learn about the life of the main character on a journey through landmarks in Kenya. Who is the devil on the cross? The suspense rises every step of the way! In the end, not only will you become shocked to find truths but you will find yourself captured by the whole process in which the journey has taken you on. Ngugi wa Thiong'o 's novel is anything but dull! The reader becomes a part of the journey. I teach this novel in my African Lit. class in Portland OR and love the response that student's have when reading it. I know have to include this novel at the end of the term because student's want to talk about it all term.
