Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

From the time he is a young boy, Neftalí hears the call of a mysterious voice. Even when the neighborhood children taunt him, and when his harsh, authoritarian father ridicules him, and when he doubts himself, Neftalí knows he cannot ignore the call. Under the canopy of the lush rain forest, into the fearsome sea, and through the persistent Chilean rain, he listens and he follows...

Combining elements of magical realism with biography, poetry, literary fiction, and sensorial, transporting illustrations, Pam Muñoz Ryan and Peter Sís take readers on a rare journey of the heart and imagination.

Review:

"The neat squares of Sis's meticulously stippled illustrations...complement and deepen the lyrical quality of the book.... This book has all the feel of a classic, elegant and measured, but deeply rewarding and eminently readable. (Starred Review)" Booklist

Review:

"Ryan's fictional evocation of the boy who would become Pablo Neruda is rich, resonant and enchanting....The illustrator's trademark drawings deliver a feeling of boundless thought and imagination....[A] splendid, beautifully presented work." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"Conflicts, injustice, and a promised future make the story compelling.... [P]aths beckon and exquisite details reflect the dreamer's maturing imagination, clothing this masterful tribute in art that fits it as ineluctably as Neruda's new name suited his purpose." Horn Book

Review:

"This is a striking, loving portrait, which does justice to Neruda's life and also stands as an accomplished work of art in its own right." Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

Synopsis:

This moving story about the birth of an artist is also a celebration of childhood, imagination, and the strength of the creative spirit. Ryan weaves sound poems and thought-provoking questions into her exquisitely crafted prose while Ss's delicate drawings transport readers to the lushness of the Chilean rainforest. Illustrations.

This one is sure to win awards in January 2011! This is Ryan's best book to date (and she has many excellent titles). The Dreamer is part biography (Pablo Neruda), part poetry, part magical realism, and part fictionalized biography. Don't overlook the fact that the structure mimics Neruda's own poetry. Don't overlook the fact that the epigrammatic poems that foreshadow the action in each chapter also fit together to form one beautiful poem that can summarize the entire book. While the font size is bigger than high school students may think of as appropriate, the content in this book is challenging even for high school students. This book should be equally at home in middle schools and elementary schools. Buy this one! You will not be sorry.
