She lives in Columbia, South Carolina, with her husband Ray, with whom she has three grown daughters.

Sylvia M. Ford, also an educational consultant who works nationally and internationally with a focus on balanced literacy, is a former classroom teacher with more than 30 years of experience in grades K-5. She worked as a language arts specialist for a K-12 school district. She lives in West Columbia, South Carolina, with her husband Don. They have two grown daughters.
