Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

One cruel night, Meggie's father reads aloud from a book called Inkheart — and an evil ruler escapes the boundaries of fiction and lands in their living room. Suddenly, Meggie is smack in the middle of the kind of adventure she has only read about in books. Meggie must learn to harness the magic that has conjured this nightmare. For only she can change the course of the story that has changed her life forever. This is Inkheart — a timeless tale about books, about imagination, about life. Dare to read it aloud.

Review:

"[A] delectably thick and transfixing fantasy....[T]he characters are wonderfully complex....Funke once again proves the power of her imagination; readers will be captivated by the chilling and thrilling world she has created here." Publishers Weekly

Review:

"Master translator Bell takes the German text and spins out of it vivid images and heart-stopping language that impel the reader through this adventure about narratives — a true feast for anyone who has ever been lost in a book." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"Like many other fantasies, this will appeal to a broad age range, though the writing is far less child-centered than it is, for example, in the Harry Potter series." Carolyn Phelan, Booklist

"Characters from books literally leap off the page in this engrossing fantasy....This 'story within a story' will delight not just fantasy fans, but all readers who like an exciting plot with larger-than-life characters." School Library Journal

"Filled with twists and turns, ups and downs, this fantasy will leave you moved..." Alan Review

Although this is a childrens book, I found the imagery fascinating. Cornelia Funke is a writer of wonderful books, and this is the first in the series ABOUT books, wizards, witches and more. Scary plots, daring escapes, and magical rescuers turn up in this book. I recommend the whole series!

This three-book series: Inheart, Inkspell, and Inkdeath is excellent. If you are going through Harry Potter withdrawal, you can get a fix with this series.

The magical world Meggie finds is beautiful and dangerous, and I love the combination. She is smart and courageous, and her relationship with her father is so endearing. I love books about books, and I couldn't put it down.
