The Enemy (Jack Reacher Novels)by Lee Child
Synopses & Reviews
You're in the Army now, son...
New Year's Day, 1990. The Berlin Wall is coming down. The Cold War is ending. Soon America won't have any enemies left. The Army won't have anybody to fight. Things are going to change. Jack Reacher is the Military Police duty officer on a base in North Carolina when he takes a call reporting a dead soldier in a hot-sheets motel. Reacher tells the local cops to handle it — heart attacks happen all the time.
But why is Reacher in North Carolina, instead of Panama, where the action is? Then the dead man turns out to have been a two-star general who should have been in Europe. And when Reacher goes to the general's house to break the news, he finds another corpse: the general's wife. What is he dealing with here? The last echoes of the old world...or the first shocks of the new?
"[A]rguably today's finest thriller series....Textured, swift and told in Reacher's inimitably tough voice, this title will...convince those who still need convincing that Child has few peers in thrillerdom." Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)
"[A] fabulously suspenseful prequel....Child has turned away from formulaic high-jinks to explore his characters instead: The result? His best so far." Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)
"Reacher remains engaging and charming in his own emotionally handicapped way, and Child again emerges as a worthy successor to Tom Clancy. (Grade: A-)" Entertainment Weekly
"The Enemy is tight and effective, and it serves its purpose: to explain Reacher's military training and to show why it has made him such a smart strategist and cool customer." Janet Maslin, The New York Times
"[H]old-your-breath action scenes....Combine that with finely textured relationships — always an extra dimension in this series — and you have a novel that takes Child in a new direction...but does so flawlessly." Booklist (Starred Review)
"[A] superlative suspense series....
"Reacher...is the thinking reader's action hero, a surprisingly tender combination of chess master and G.I. Joe, a guy who always thinks six or eight steps ahead before making his move." Seattle Times
"Child knocked this one out of the ballpark....[A] rip-roaring read from the first page to the last." St. Petersburg Times
"Lee Child, considered by some to be the best thriller writer in the business, has created an alter ego in Jack Reacher...succeeds because we either want to be him, or to be with him when our back is against the wall." The Oregonian (Portland, OR)
"Reacher is still one of the two or three most compelling figures in the new hard-guy, lone-wolf genre. The pages almost turn themselves." New York Daily News
"Child has fashioned this novel as more mystery than thriller....These are all nice touches that elevate The Enemy above the usual paperback thriller....The Enemy moves with all the speed and strength of a tank in battle mode." Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
"Child believes that a great opening chapter makes or breaks a novel. And true to his literary philosophy, The Enemy grabs the reader right from the start and doesn't let go." BookReporter.com
"The eighth novel in the series will enthrall Reacher's many fans....The Enemy sizzles with suspense and action. Child sets a breathless pace laced with laconic asides from the opening paragraph to the final line." Orlando Sentinel
"Intelligent, exciting, more experimental than you'd have ever guessed." Literary Review
In this New York Times bestseller, elite military cop Jack Reacher turns into a renegade when he finds himself tangled in a drama of desperate desires and violent death — and a chilling, ingenious, and treacherous conspiracy.

Jack Reacher. Hero. Loner. Soldier. Soldier’ s son. An elite military cop, he was one of the army’ s brightest stars. But in every cop’ s life there is a turning point. One case. One messy, tangled case that can shatter a career. Turn a lawman into a renegade. And make him question words like honor, valor, and duty. For Jack Reacher, this is that case.
New Year’ s Day, 1990. The Berlin Wall is coming down. The world is changing. And in a North Carolina “ hot-sheets” motel, a two-star general is found dead. His briefcase is missing. Nobody knows what was in it. Within minutes Jack Reacher has his orders: Control the situation. But this situation can’ t be controlled. Within hours the general’ s wife is murdered hundreds of miles away. Then the dominoes really start to fall.
Two Special Forces soldiers— the toughest of the tough— are taken down, one at a time. Top military commanders are moved from place to place in a bizarre game of chess. And somewhere inside the vast worldwide fortress that is the U.S. Army, Jack Reacher— an ordinarily untouchable investigator for the 110th Special Unit— is being set up as a fall guy with the worst enemies a man can have.
But Reacher won’ t quit. He’ s fighting a new kind of war. And he’ s taking a young female lieutenant with him on a deadly hunt that leads them from the ragged edges of a rural army post to the winding streets of Paris to a confrontation with an enemy he didn’ t know he had. With his French-born mother dying— and divulging to her son one last, stunning secret— Reacher is forced to question everything he oncebelieved… about his family, his career, his loyalties— and himself. Because this soldier’ s son is on his way into the darkness, where he finds a tangled drama of desperate desires and violent death— and a conspiracy more chilling, ingenious, and treacherous than anyone could have guessed.
