This is so good. Harris and Me is touted as being a work of fiction, but Paulsen has admitted that it was "semi-autobiographical." It's about an eleven-year-old boy who was taken from his parents for his "own good" and sent to a farm to stay with his aunt, uncle, and cousins for the summer. The boy and his cousin Harris find so much mischief (or perhaps it finds them) that you won't be able to read passages out loud to anyone without laughing so hard that your words are incomprehensible! Thoroughly enjoyable!

Publisher Comments:

This summer will be different. That's for sure. When an eleven-year-old city boy is dropped off to stay on a farm with relatives, he doesn't know what to expect. His cousin Harris soon takes care of that. Harris is rude and crude and finds trouble at every turn. He leads his city cousin into everything from wrestling slippery pigs to catching mice to a daredevil jump out of a barn loft. And that's not all. There are swimming and cowboy movies and enough good food to fill the boys up for days.

Farm life is hard but never lonely. Before long, Harris's cousin has found a place where he belongs. If only summer could last forever.

Synopsis:

A young boy spends his 10th summer on his aunt and uncle's farm. His days are filled with back-breaking chores, gut-busting meals, and crazy escapades with his cousin. Paulsen offers a nostalgic and rollicking tale with endearing characters.

For anyone who has spent time on a farm or for anyone who has spent time as a pre-teen, you will find this book delightful. Paulsen's ability to describe the characters and the scenes is on Harris's family's farm are so well done, you will feel as if you are part of the family as well. This book, while geared for young readers (5th-7th grade) it truly is an "anybody" book. Great for family read-aloud night, be prepared to laugh until your sides hurt. If my father hand been Harris's cousin and had spent time with Harris, I most likely would never have been born. I don't think my father or Harris would have lived to tell the tale! Enjoy!
