Stolen season :a journey through America and baseball's minor leagues

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

When Los Angeles Times reporter David Lamb decided to take his RV, "Forty-niner," on a backroads tour of baseball's minor leagues, he was hoping to recapture the spirit of his rural youth. To his delight, he discovered that beyond the glitzy cities and superhighways lies a forgotten America.

These are the places where dreams of reaching "The Show" line the benches and the young at heart fill the bleachers. Where cheap motels, milkshakes, burgers, and beers are a way of life and where artificial turf, domed stadiums, and multi-million-dollar egos are exchanged for the intimacy of timeless, rickety ballparks, emerald green fields, and hard, gutsy play.

From the California League's Stockton Ports to the Carolina League's Durham Bulls, Lamb encountered the enterprising owners, dedicated managers, entertaining PA announcers, diehard fans, and Hall of Fame, instructors who comprise baseball's 150 farm teams. A travelogue into the country's soul, Stolen Season is at once both the essence of baseball as we know it and America how we remember it.

After working three years in minor league baseaball, it is safe to say that David Lamb gives his readers a bona fide description on everyone that makes minor league baseaball happen. Lamb inspired me to take the road less traveled for three years! See what he can do for you..never say never!
