Publisher Comments:

The #1 New York Times bestselling author Nicholas Sparks adds an element of suspense to the story of a woman who must learn to trust again in order to allow herself to love again.A young woman appears in a small NC town. She makes one friend, a woman who lives nearby, but other than that, she keeps to herself. Soon, however, a series of events pulls her into the circle of a local merchant, a widower with two children, and against her better judgment, she finds herself drawn to him and letting down her carefully constructed guard.

For this women has a secret, a secret that has forced her to hide her identity, run as far away as she can from home, and escape a past that still haunts and terrifies her. It is inevitable that her past will catch up with her-in the form of an abusive husband who refuses to let her go. But what remains unknown is whether she will allow herself to love and trust again, and to what extent her husband will go to ensure that she'll have a future...but only if it includes him.

At once a love story, and a tale filled with suspense and mystery, SAFE HAVEN is a novel about the darker forces of love, and what can happen when fear is replaced by belief...in oneself, in second chances, and in the power of forces that must be accepted but can never be fully understood

Synopsis:

During an idyllic summer abroad, Renee falls in love with a handsome Italian, but the affair comes to an end when she returns to North Carolina and marries her college boyfriend. Two decades later, Renee drops everything to be with her dying best friend, Audrey, unaware that she still has a few surprises up her sleeve.

Synopsis:

When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family.

But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her . . . a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo's empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards . . . and that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven.

Synopsis:

The #1 New York Times bestselling author tells the story of romance lost and rediscovered-and the wrenching decision one woman must make between loyalty and love.

Every person's story has a beginning, middle and end, but the path that leads from one stage of life to the next is rarely predictable. Renee's journey begins when she is a carefree college student, studying in Italy with her best friend, Audrey. During that idyllic summer abroad, Renee meets a handsome local, and falls deeply in love. But like all summer romances, the affair comes to an end when she returns to North Carolina. Back home, Renee fulfills everyone's expectations - including her own - by marrying her longtime college boyfriend. Over the next two decades, she raises a family and lives a predictable, if in some ways unfulfilling life. When Audrey announces that she's dying of cancer, Renee drops everything to spend Audrey's last days by her side, unaware that her unconventional best friend still has a few surprises up her sleeve . . . surprises that will turn Renee's world upside down, and offer her a chance to re-live the choices of her past in a way she never dreamed possible.

Picking one book as my favorite is difficult. I tend to go through books like most women go through chocolate. However, I decided to choose this book, as it was one of my most recent reads.

Nicholas Sparks knows how to write a love story. His characters are endearing, and there is an empathetic draw to them. I did not choose this book because of the love story though. Although I was drawn in by the characters, my reasons are different than most. I related to Katie/Erin and Alex on a personal level. I am a single parent, and go through the daily routine much the same as Alex does. But reading Katie/Erin's story was a bit like seeing my life in print. The author really nailed the emotions experienced when facing such obstacles as hers. Leaving your life behind, and starting fresh isn't always easy. And looking over your shoulder in fear is a heavy burden. It was nice to see someone able to capture the complexity of the situation in such a manner.

That being said; I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a nice, engaging read. If you liked the Notebook, Dear John, or The Lucky One; you'll enjoy this.
