Hiaasen makes the top of my list for his bitingly funny writing. As a former Floridian who fled the land of greedy land developers and Yankees who dress in pink and green plaid, his story especially rings true to me. Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:Who let the voles out? The precious, blue-tongued mango voles have been stolen from the Amazing Kingdom theme park on North Key Largo by ruthless thugs who have much bigger — and deadlier — things in mind. On the hunt for the rare rodents is Joe Winder, a burned-out ex-muckraking reporter who now works for the park as their PR man.
Even as a scandal breaks out over the theft, Winder finds himself trailing an eco-terrorist geriatric, a certain former-governor-turned-swamp rat, and sleazy land developer Francis X. Kingsbury. Determined to uncover the true nature of the Kingdom, Winder must survive this harrowing wilderness — before the natives get to him... Review:"Hiassen sends his reluctant journalist hero after a morally corrupt real estate developer in this scattershot but inventive entertainment." Publisher's Weekly Review:"Rips, zips, hurtles, keeping us turning the pages at breakfinger pace." New York Times Book Review Review:"Ruthlessly wicked...wonderful." Atlanta Journal-Constitution Review:"Hiaasen is an original...a compulsive entertainer...driving his story at a hair-raising tempo." Los Angeles Times Book Review Review:"Native Tongue moves briskly, and Hiaasen's inventiveness and verbal dexterity seem limitless." USA Today Review:"It is a measure of the writer's talent that no matter how bizarre the situation, it is believable.....Highly recommended." Library Journal Review:"Madcap and sometimes quite funny, but strained as well, with the action often so absurd as to leach realism and thus suspense. The problem may be that Hiaasen's tilled this particular crime-comic soil one time too many." Kirkus Reviews Synopsis:Now reissued — one of the most beloved novels by the New York Times bestselling author in which dedicated, if somewhat demented, environmentalists battle sleazy real estate developers in the Florida Keys.
