Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The classic Xenogenesis trilogy, complete in one volume: Dawn, Adulthood Rites, and Imago.

The acclaimed trilogy that comprises Lilith's Brood is multiple Hugo and Nebula award-winner Octavia E. Butler at her best. Presenting three complete novels in one volume, Lilith's Brood is a profoundly evocative, sensual — and disturbing — epic of human transformation.

Lilith Iyapo is in the Andes, mourning the death of her family, when war destroys Earth. Centuries later, she is resurrected — by miraculously powerful unearthly beings, the Oankali. Driven by an irresistible need to heal others, the Oankali are rescuing our dying planet by merging genetically with mankind. But Lilith and all humanity must now share the world with uncanny, unimaginably alien creatures: their own children.

This is their story...

Review:

"Octavia E. Butler is one of the finest voices in fiction — period....A master storyteller." Washington Post Book World

Review:

"The themes...that suffuse Lilith's Brood clearly parallel the experience of American blacks during slavery, and these are the racial memories Butler draws upon to describe how truly wise, heroic, difficult, and ultimately successful accommodationist politics can be." The Village Voice

Review:

"Superb...challenging and visionary....A classic." Seattle Times/Post-Intelligencer

Review:

"Shows the author at the height of her imaginative and writing powers." Essence

Review:

"Butler in top form...spare, vivid prose...intriguing, well-developed ideas, solid characters, and crisp narrative." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"She is one of those rare authors who pay serious attention to the way human beings actually work together and against each other, and she does so with extraordinary plausibility." Locus

I haven't enjoyed a science fiction book so much in years. This is actually three books in one volume, and there's everything you could ever want from good science fiction -- post-apocalyptic fragility of the human race, tentacly aliens, and human-alien cross breeding. Definitely a good read, I pretty much stopped doing any other liesure activity while I was reading this book.
