Publisher Comments:

Part foreign affairs discourse, part humor, and part twisted self-help guide, The Geography of Bliss takes the reader from America to Iceland to India in search of happiness, or, in the crabby author's case, moments of un-unhappiness. The book uses a beguiling mixture of travel, psychology, science and humor to investigate not what happiness is, but where it is. Are people in Switzerland happier because it is the most democratic country in the world? Do citizens of Qatar, awash in petrodollars, find joy in all that cash? Is the King of Bhutan a visionary for his initiative to calculate Gross National Happiness? Why is Asheville, North Carolina so damn happy? With engaging wit and surprising insights, Eric Weiner answers those questions and many others, offering travelers of all moods some interesting new ideas for sunnier destinations and dispositions.

Great journey for the "answer" to what is happiness and where can you find it, which of course is really the "Journey" itself. Well written by National Public Radio world corespondent in an honest, sometimes naive but always humorous style. Makes you feel like you are also on the journey next to Weiner. I can certainly hear him laughing with me with his humorous accounts.

The author travels to 10 different countries exploring why residents are happy or unhappy in those places. Rather than looking at happiness person by person, he looks at different cultures and how they define happiness. It should not be surprising that happiness reflects both the diversity and universality of human culture. But it is surprising, thought provoking, and illuminating of humanity. Also, this book is funny - it is written like a good travelogue and demands to be reread.
