Paul Baumer enlisted with his classmates in the German army of World War I. Youthful, enthusiastic, they become soldiers. But despite what they have learned, they break into pieces under the first bombardment in the trenches. And as horrible war plods on year after year, Paul holds fast to a single vow: to fight against the principles of hate that meaninglessly pits young men of the same generation but different uniforms against each other — if only he can come out of the war alive.

"The world has a great writer in Erich Maria Remarque. He is a craftsman of unquestionably first rank, a man who can bend language to his will. Whether he writes of men or of inanimate nature, his touch is sensitive, firm, and sure." The New York Times Book Review

All quiet on the wastern front is a must read for all, it appeals to every generation and gives a unique view of life in the trenches from the soldiers point of view.
The author was able to describe the carnage of warfare with great detail. As you read the book you began to feel the loneliness, pain, and depression the soldiers felt while fighting the war. Even when the main character was given a vacation where he returned home to his family you still feel the same feeling of hopelessness you got from when they were fighting on the front.
Furthermore the devasation of the war, overtime as all of the main characters friends slowly died off
is heart- rendering as you can feel the enivatibility of their deaths.
