If you want to read a lively, well researched one volume book on Jewish history "Wanderings: Chaim Potok's History of the Jews" is a great choice. Potok brings his masterful skill as a novelist [e.g., The Chosen, The Promise, and The Gift of Asher Zev] and moving portrayer of a complex, conflicted Jewish Russian family {The Gates of November: Chronicles of the Slepak Family] to the story of the Jewish people. The result is a great, informative read. It includes a bibliography and index.
