Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Tim Parks and his wife, Rita, came to their flat on the aging, eccentric Via Colombare in Montecchio twelve years ago for a short stay. There was trouble from the moment they moved in--under cover of night--and it has gone delightfully up and down hill ever since. In this amusing and loving tribute to the glorious country he has embraced, British novelist Tim Parks shares his secrets of survival, tales of the unexpected, and treasured friendships with new-found friends and Italian neighbors.

At first I was hesitant to continue reading, because it sounded as if the author did not care for his move to Italy. However, I soon understood his writing was done this way to draw you into the feel of being a foreigner and learning to adapt to a new lifestyle. He takes you on the journey with him from outsider to becoming part of the community where he has chosen to live. By the time you finish the book, you are as much an "Italian neighbor" as he has become. A good read for anyone who has wished to move to Italy or just wants to know what living in a different world is like.
